An innovative manufacturing initiative has been launched in Dundee, featuring a Rautomead as a key player in a £5 million research endeavor. This ambitious project focuses on tackling industry-specific challenges and pioneering new technological advancements.

Gavin Harper, in his October 2, 2023 article, highlighted the role of Rautomead, a specialist in continuous casting, in this groundbreaking scheme. The company is among the nine pioneering early-stage prosperity partnerships selected across the UK.

The project, backed by a £5 million investment, is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). This collaboration aims to revolutionize the production of specialist alloys through innovative enhancements to the continuous casting process.

Brian Frame, the Managing Director of Rautomead, expressed his enthusiasm and gratitude for the support provided by the prosperity partnership funding. He is keen on establishing a distinguished centre of excellence for advanced alloys in the Dundee region. “We are very pleased and grateful to have received the support of the prosperity partnership funding. We look forward to creating a real centre of excellence for advanced alloys within the Dundee area,” said Frame.

Frame also noted the synergy between this project and the company's strategic goals, emphasizing the significance of their ongoing partnership with the University of Dundee. “This project fits very neatly with our overall company strategy. The continued partnership with University of Dundee will undoubtedly enhance the productivity of this journey,” he added.

The project aims to refine the design of continuous casting rigs, essential for producing high-value, superior-quality alloys. It involves determining the optimal heat transport properties and material compatibility for the rig designs.

This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to Dundee's economic growth, potentially establishing the city as a hub for alloy processing innovation.

Dr. Thomas Jones from the University of Dundee's School of Science and Engineering expressed his excitement about the partnership. He sees it as a vital step for the local area, fostering collaboration between the local industry, Rautomead Ltd, and the University. “The partnership is a great opportunity for the Dundee area. It will support the collaboration of local industry, Rautomead Ltd, and the University of Dundee. Together we will accelerate the development of a novel high-value manufacturing process, building on the work of our research team,” remarked Dr. Jones
